What is NLP?

Neuro Linguistic Programming has been around since 1970's when its co-founders, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, first modelled other therapists

NLP is frequently known as the "users manual for your mind" and studying NLP gives us insights into how our thinking patterns can effect every aspect of our lives

It looks at the way in which we think and process our thoughts (Neuro), the language patterns we use (Linguistic) and our behaviours (Programming) and how these interact to have a positive (or negative) effect on us as individuals

NLP is a collection of  methods, models and tools which create an understanding of thought process and behaviour.   Understanding these and applying them can bring about a positive change in you, others and organisations, and offers an extremely flexible approach for a variety of issues such as:

Anxiety, stress, confidence and self esteem:  you may find yourself in a situation where you feel anxious or stressed or it would be useful to have strategies to help you deal effectively with  those feelings in the future.  Perhaps you feel held back by lack of self confidence and/or self esteem.  NLP can help you find the courage and resources to unblock your potential

Personal Change: If you are looking for a change of direction in life, NLP can help you define goals and objectives and  identify the steps involved to achieve them.  NLP can help you to enhance the things that are working well for you now, and change the things that aren't.  It can give you clarity and a deeper understanding of how your mind works and the power and flexibility to change unwanted  and unhelpful behaviour, and gain the confidence and courage to move forward

Health and Wellbeing:  One of the key beliefs of  NLP is that the mind and body affect each other and have a strong symbiotic relationship.  NLP offers strategies for individuals to manage their heatlh and wellbeing.  NLP also fits really well with organisational wellbeing strategies and builds cultures where employees feel more able to be honest, authentic and at their best

Relationships:   Issues can arise between partners, family members and work colleagues.  The most common cause being a breakdown in communication. This is because the relationships we have with other people are based entirely on how we communicate with each other.  It is often the case that problems arise when people do not express what they really feel. When the surface message does not accurately represent the internal message this can cause confusion and incongruence.  NLP can help by enabling us to become more aware of how we communicate, as well as increasing awareness of what the other person is trying to communicate

Phobias and Fears:  NLP is well known for its success in dealing with fears and phobias, and there are many ways that it can be used to help with these challenges.  I myself, had what others would consider an irrational phobia of sharks which sigificantly impacted on my life and my love of swimming - whilst I am not in love with sharks having participated in NLP Phobia cure I am now able to tolerate sharks in my life!!!!!

Business:  Basic NLP skills can improve and enhance communication, rapport building and goal setting, all of which are immediately applicable to the business world. NLP can also support and enhance organisational development, change management, conflict resolution, team building, leadership and management development.  For organisations which value employee engagement and wellbeing NLP is an excellent complementary strategy and intervention
